People’s Defence Force (PDF) fighters last week badly injured two junta soldiers in an attack in Kawhmu, the Yangon Region township where detained leader Aung San Suu Kyi held her parliamentary seat before the February 1 coup.
The resistance forces opened fire on two vehicles at around 5pm on Friday and the two soldiers who were hit are in a critical condition, said the information and psychological warfare officer of the National Unity Government’s (NUG) Yangon Regional Command.
“Judging from the extent of their injuries, there’s no way they could survive,” he said.
The soldiers were on patrol in a small military vehicle and a civilian vehicle when they were attacked on Kyaik Taw road in the village of Magyikan. The patrol vehicles sped up and drove away without returning fire, the information officer said.
Local news sources reported that the junta soldiers did fire and three civilians were injured in the fighting, but Myanmar Now was unable to confirm this. Calls to a junta spokesperson went unanswered.
The Yangon Regional Command posted a 14 second video to Facebook that showed multiple rounds of gunfire going off from inside an area of woodland.
A local resident who requested anonymity said they heard gunshots in the area once at around 6pm on November 12 and then again at around 4am the following morning.
At around 11am on Saturday morning, some 20 soldiers from the Myanmar Navy left from Kawhmu towards Kungyangon Township in a military truck and a civilian vehicle, the local said.
Last week’s attack was part of what the NUG has dubbed Operation Pyan Hlwar Aung. The operation describes attacks that began on September 7 in Yangon, Bago and Ayeyarwady regions.
In late October Yangon Regional Command announced that its forces had clashed with the military a total of 99 times and carried out a total of 256 bomb attacks as part of the operation.
Four junta soldiers were killed in a bomb attack on their truck in Yangon’s Bargayar road on October 23 as part of the operation.
