More than a dozen protesters detained in Naypyitaw

More than a dozen protesters were detained by security forces in the capital Naypyitaw on Monday afternoon as widespread fury about the February 1 military coup was channeled into a general strike, supported by massive rallies in in cities across the country.

The protesters in Naypyitaw were rounded up by the police and shoved into vans in the townships of Ottarathiri, Zabuthiri and Pyinmana.

Security forces also attempted to detain journalists at the scene after one officer shouted “Arrest them! Confiscate their cameras.” The journalists, including one working for Myanmar Now, ran away and evaded arrest.

The military has deployed troops at key junctions in an attempt to suppress protests, which include thousands of civil servants whose civil disobedience campaign has virtually shut down the regime’s bureaucracy.

This is a developing story and will be updated soon.
