Coup regime forces murder seven, injure 20 in Thingangyun on bloodiest day of uprising so far

The coup regime’s forces killed seven and injured 20 on Sunday during an attack on protesters in Yangon’s Thingangyun township, a doctor from the Thingangyun Sanpya Hospital told Myanmar Now.

Protesters had already started to disperse after gathering at the AKK Shopping Centre on Lay Daung Kan road when police and soldiers opened fire.

Only four of those killed have been identified so far. The youngest is Min Khant Soe, 18. Hein Htet Dway, 24, Lynn Lynn Kyaw, 43, and 25-year-old Kyaw Lynn Khaing were also killed. The hospital and volunteers are still trying to identify the three others.

They were among at least 39 killed for opposing the military dictatorship on Sunday, marking the bloodiest day yet since a massive popular uprising began in early February.

Lynn Lynn Kyaw was shot in the chest and the bullet passed all the way through. His wife, Than Than Thwe, said she heard gunshots after her husband went out to protest with three other friends. Later, she found out he had been shot dead.

“I will never forgive them. I will be satisfied only when their families suffer the same grief,” she said.

As of midnight on Sunday, the Thingangyun Sanpya Hospital had admitted more than 70 injured people who were shot by the coup regime’s forces in other townships.

Among them was 15-year-old Zuu Wint Wah, who is in a critical condition after being shot in the head in South Dagon.

“I’m proud of her,” Tin Ko Ko Oo, her father. “But I will never forgive. My daughter told me over the last few days not to cry if she died.”

Zuu Wint Wah was arrested in early March for participating in an anti-coup protest and released just over a week ago, he added.

The shootings in Thingangyun stopped at around 7:30pm, but police and soldiers took up positions on Lay Daung Kan road and residents were extremely concerned they would enter the surrounding neighbourhoods.

At around 9:20pm, the regime forces shot at community night guards. Five minutes later, another three injured men reached the emergency ward of the Thingangyun Sanpya Hospital.
