Founded by a well-known Kachin ethnic leader Dr. Manam Tu Ja, the Kachin State Democracy Party was registered in 2013.
Dr. Tu Ja was Vice President of Kachin Independence Organization (KIO) till 2009 and led the KIO delegation that participated in the military-run National Convention that resulted in the drafting of the 2008 constitution. KIO is the political wing of the ethnic armed group Kachin Independence Army (KIA).
His application to form a political party and contest the 2010 elections was rejected by the Election Commission of the then military government due to his relationship with the KIO.
The KSDP is contesting in most constituencies in Kachin state, with the objectives for national reconciliation and the amendment of controversial 2008 constitution.
