The Kayan National Party was founded by members of the former Democratic Organisation for Kayan National Unity (DOKNU), which contested the 1990 general elections.

The objectives of the party include self-rule for the ethnic Kayan people - who live in southern Shan State and Kayan State - and the establishment of a federal union of Myanmar in which ethnic minorities have greater political autonomy. It also wants to see adjacent areas where Kayan people live incorporated into Kayan State.

It won two seats during the 2010 general elections. It will contest in 13 constituencies in the Nov. 8 elections, though the Union Election Commission rejected one of its candidates.

The Kayan National Party is a member of the Nationalities Brotherhood Federation, an alliance of ethnic minority parties in Myanmar.
